Preparing for your Portrait Session

Regardless of the type of portrait you choose, it is important to prepare for your session. Our consultants will help you with details about your session, but these general helpful hints can be the beginning of your planning.

Clothing which is simple and classic will help your portrait stand the test of time. You, your child or your entire family is the focal point of our work, therefore it is important that clothing choices complement and not distract. Avoid large, bold patterns and bright colors that may draw attention away from your face. Long sleeves are better than short. Be aware of shoes and stockings - if not coordinated properly they may distract and take the focus away from the face. Harmony of colors and patterns will make for a more pleasing and longer-lasting portrait. Darker colors tend to have a slimming effect compared to lighter colors.

Eyeglass lenses can create glare and distortion in the portrait. In order to avoid this, we often suggest removing the lenses or asking your optical store for an empty frame that matches your own. If you're not comfortable without your glasses on, we'll do everything we can to reduce the glare and distortion.

Ladies - Make-up should be fresh and natural. Avoid unusual or heavy application of blush, foundation or lipstick.

Men Ë A fresh shave is a must. If you have a beard or mustache, make sure it's neatly trimmed.

Plan to wear your hair in a style you're comfortable with. Don't experiment with a new cut or style for your portrait.

You may wish to use props such as sports gear, hobby items, certain toys, and the like, to help us capture the real you. We also have creative prop items to help set the tone and mood of your portrait. In family or children portrait sessions, props - your own or ours - will often encourage interacting poses which result in timeless pieces of art.
